Bangladeshi and Indian food with extravagant service. Less formal meals available during the lunch buffet and at the adjoining restaurant, Tripti Cafe.
I think I was impressed with Gandhi’s vegetarian menu. I love the way they do chicken, and sometime or other I will try their lamb dishes, but I was in a vegetarian mood last night. I ordered the mushroom saag which, like all saags on the menu, has a spinach mixture to it. I’m a mushroom glutton, so that explains my choice of saag last night.
There is nothing austere about the vegetarian selections. Like the rest of the menu, the dishes are well seasoned and expertly prepared. Being a rather large group, we got family-size platters of the basmati rice up and down the table.
The service did take much longer than it would for a more intimate party, but that’s the nature of dining in a large group. Perhaps next time, if our numbers continue as they are, we should consider ordering large appetizer platters for the group — we could even call the order in ahead.
Sometime or other, I’m going to get a dessert. :) I want to get a lahssi with rosewater (not on the menu) from Gahndi. Perhaps when we run out of Hamtramck restaurants, we could return to those we’ve already dined at, for coffee and dessert.
Gandhi has always been an enjoyable dining experience for me.
To start, their service is exemplary. They manage to strike a balance of being attentive without being disruptive. Co-owner, Mohammed Ahad, is the definitive gracious host. He and his staff are quick to assist patrons who may be unfamiliar with their extensive offerings.
The food is very well prepared, generously portioned and tasty. You could make a meal out of their mixed platter appetizer alone. It features a great-tasting vegetable somosa, lamb sheekh kebobs, chicken tikka and crispy vegetable pakura fritters. I don’t know the names of the dipping sauces but I can tell you that the brown one is made with tamarind which is delectable and sweet and the creamy green one has a spicy kick.
Either the lamb, chicken or mushroom saag I can account for being very good. The chicken tikka massala is also tender and rich. The basmati rice is not too dry or sticky and has an inviting aroma enhanced by their use of sautéed onion as a garnish. Their freshly baked variety of flat breads are warm and savory. The mango lassi is a sweet treat as is their saffron-infused rice pudding.
It should also be mentioned that in addition to the street parking, Gandhi has a smallish parking lot situated on the south side of the building.
