soooo, thats 108 gallons a year divided into 720 for cow care equals just under $7 a gallon for fresh milk every week plus $150 one time setup.

seems expensive but when you figure in the costs of organic milks and creams at a store and the fact that the raw milk is reportedly healthier for you, then it works out. optionally a half share would cost the same but only be $7 a week for a gallon.

Congrats on being the first visitor to comment. :)

$7 per gallon sounds about right, and we were paying $4-5 per gallon for the completely gross stuff. My latest adventure is culturing buttermilk. I had no idea that it was as easy as leaving raw milk on the counter for 3 days.

Where is that booth at eastern market? I'd really like to find a good source for grass-fed beef as well.

He's in the shed closest to Gratiot. Hampshire Farms.

We should talk about going in on a side of grass-fed beef, rh. I just found this map of farms in Michigan
    .

how much do you think that would cost?

Buying in bulk might not be necessary. I was at Eastern Market on Saturday and noticed that someone there has grass fed beef in smallish quantities. We'll have to try it out.

All of the good "organic milk" I have had always tastes very cooked. I guess that is the Ultra-pasteurized part, It is delicious, probably because it's like cold liquid pudding. In Manhattan it's an average $7 for a half gallon of "organic" stuff. The Ronybrook Farm in up-state new york is the best milk/ and chocolate milk i've ever had. comes in Glass which is key, and has a cream top, which most customers at the deli i worked would assume it had gone bad.

I have tried the pastured beef from 2 different vendors at eastern market so far, and it's super good. best hamburgers i ever made, worth $5/lb anyday. There's a guy with really good pork, chickens and eggs, also, but i can't remember his name. To date, i still have not convinced my wife that a deep freeze would be worth it. she's afraid of the basement, and the garage.

We are pastured beef converts as well. We've also been getting whole pastured chickens. I like the taste and texture of it, and there is so much less fat. Instead of freezing it, I'm working up the nerve to try some charcuterie in the basement.
